"Government 's solution imposing a 20% soda tax, Effective or Not?"
Juaymae Colaway
Popular drink we all love is “soft drink.” Common terms could be soda, carbonated drink, fizzy drink, pop, and many others. The only thing that concerns everyone with drinking this beverage is thelarge amount of sugar it contains. Well if you are addicted to sodas, I think you should first know how much sugar it contains.
Starting with a 12-ounce can of a regular coke, it contains 39 grams of added sugar, which is about 9 1/3 teaspoons of sugar. Mountain Dew’s 20-ounce bottle has 77 grams of sugar, around 15 teaspoons. Pepsi has 69 grams of sugar in a 20-ounce bottle, about 13.8 teaspoons of sugar per bottle. A 12-ounce bottle of sprite has 148 calories, it contains about more than 8 teaspoons of sugar.
How much sugar a person should only take each day?
Women should not take more than 6 teaspoons of sugar each day; it is about 24 grams of added sugar and 100 calories. Men should not have more than 9 teaspoons which is equivalent to about 36 grams of added sugar and about 150 calories.
Too much intake of sugar would lead to…
Tooth decay, gum disease which may lead to
heart disease, mood swings, increases stress,
increases risk of obesity, and diabetes.
Introducing sugar tax will be helpful to
avoid/reduce risk of those bad diseases that
we can get. Manufacturers/ companies of soft
drinks should be given a minimum use of
sugar content in their products. If its content
is beyond the limit, levy a charge against the
company. The World Health Organization
(WHO) still urge governments around the
world to impose 20 percent tax per liter
against all beverages. Places with soda tax are
on countries such as Denmark, France, Hungary, and other countries, to American localities: Berkeley, California, Philadelphia, and others, on Nations and territories: Barbados, French Polynesia, Mauritius, Nauru, Samoa, and other nations.
