Should students be allowed to take mandatory drug test?

   Juaymae Colaway

Our government is still doing a random drug testing to hig school and college students. According to Section 36 of the Republic Act 9165 (Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002), students of secondary and tertiary schools, shall, pursuant to related rules and regulations as contained in the school’s handbook, and with notice to parents, undergo drug testing, whether in public or private schools, and such cost will be borne by the government.

Now the question , what if the government

make it a mandatory rather just a random

drug test? This process will surely be effective,

especially to find students who has a habit

of using drug. With mandatory drug test,

students can be monitored and cured.

But, sadly the government cannot support

this program. According to DepEd Assistant

Secretary Jesus Mateo, limited funds will be a

big problem and that for the meantime random testing could be done.

Mandatory testing for all students entail a big budget, he added.

He also said that random drug tests combined with continuous anti-drug  abuse education at schools will be a good measure to keep students away from taking drugs.
